William H. Pond, the only son of the late James M. and Fanny G. Pond, was born in Norwood, Mass. near Boston, March 17, 1855. He learned the soapstone business as a boy. He came to Saugatuck with his parents about 1879 and worked as a carpenter and shipbuilder with his father. In 1880 he married Fannie Deming, the daughter of Amos Deming. Fannie and William had four children: James who died in infancy, Gertrude, George and Edwin. The Pond family moved to Chicago about 1899 so William could return to the soapstone business.
